Cannabis Plant Clones: Things You Should Know
Ever since growing marijuana in Pennsylvania became legal, many growers are looking for ways to cultivate their plants. Starting with cannabis clones is an excellent investment, but what else should you know about clones? Different from a seedling, a clone is already an adult plant. Keep a close eye on it during the vegetative cycle as if you’re not careful it can start pre-flowering. Ideally, you want to have a plant with plenty of buds, so the stronger it grows, the better it will flower.
The cannabis plant goes through two cycles during its life, vegetative and flowering. Balancing the time that the plant stays in the vegetative cycle is highly recommended to ensure robust and flavorful buds. During the vegetative cycle, it grows roots and foliage. So, the plant should receive plenty of light, ideally 18 hours a day. Pay close attention to your marijuana plant during this stage to make sure it grows healthily. Some signs of heat stress include curling or drooping leaves, and lack of light may cause the plant to become a hermaphrodite and start producing seeds. We recommend you make space for your clones before they arrive so you can transplant them immediately. However, if you’re unable to transplant your clones right away, here are some tips on how you can temporarily store them until you’re able to do it properly.
- Start by preparing a diluted nutrient solution: 400 to 600 ppm (parts per million) and water your clones with this mixture.
- Place your clones under a low-intensity fluorescent light, preferably with T8 or T12 bulbs. Avoid T5 lights at this stage, as it can make the clone grow faster.
- Keep the cubes moist but pay attention to avoid water accumulating in the tray.
- If you see that the clones are stretching and growing fast, keep them apart and prepare to transplant as soon as possible.
Follow these steps to give yourself more time to set up things properly for your clones.
Preparing To Transplant Your Cannabis Clones
Start by preparing the soil you chose to receive the clones. This preparation can include soaking, conditioning, or a number of other steps. To improve the structure of the soil, you can use substances such as synthetic or organic fertilizer as well as oyster shell meal, which can help with the pH buffering.
First, transplant your clone to a 1-gallon container, and once the roots are developed, you can transplant it again to a larger vessel. It’s crucial for the cannabis plant to have a fully developed rootball, which can take a couple of weeks.
Transplant Your Clones To A Larger Space

Always pack the soil gently around the cube after watering, and after a few weeks your clone will be well-rooted.
Ease Your Cannabis Plant Clones Into Direct Light
Depending on your location and the current season, you may choose to grow your cannabis plants outdoors. In our nursery, clones are kept under a 24-hour fluorescent or LED lighting. So, it’s crucial to make a smooth transition into natural sunlight to avoid shock.
After transplanting, start by exposing the marijuana plant to indirect sunlight and partial shade for the first few days. Also, check how humid the rock wool cube is. Sometimes, the soil in the pot can take the moisture away from the cube, and it will be too dry to support the plant. If you see this happening, pour water into the cube itself.
As your plant is growing, keep an eye out for nutrient deficiencies, mildew or other issues. Once you feel your plant has reached a good size, you can change the lighting schedule to make it start flowering. The plant will begin to grow buds as soon as it starts getting at least 12 hours of darkness, and that’s when you need to control the schedule. During the flowering process, the cannabis plant must obtain 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness.
How To Grow Marijuana Clones For High THC?
