How to Root and Establish a Cannabis Clone (Beginner's Guide, Chapter 2)
Your clone is home. Whether you picked it up locally or it arrived by mail, the first one to two weeks are the most fragile window in its entire life — this is when a clone either settles in and starts pushing new growth, or struggles and stalls. This chapter walks through exactly what to do in that critical window: initial care, watering, monitoring root development, spotting early trouble, and the first transplant.
1. The First 24–48 Hours: Reducing Transplant Shock
However your clone arrived, it just went through some kind of disruption — a move from a dispensary shelf, or a trip through the mail. Either way, treat the first two days as a settling-in period, not a growing period.
- Low, indirect light only. Skip the full-intensity grow light for now. A clone that's still adjusting can be scorched or stressed by strong light before its root system is ready to support that level of growth.
- Keep humidity elevated with airflow, not a sealed environment. Since Homegrown Nursery clones arrive already rooted, they don't need the sealed, high-humidity dome treatment used for bare unrooted cuttings. If you use a dome or a loosely tented clear bag, make sure it's fully vented — vent holes or a partially open lid — rather than sealed shut. A rooted clone can take up water through its roots normally; a sealed dome traps excess moisture around the leaves and stem, which raises the risk of mold and rot rather than preventing it. Mist lightly with your spray bottle once or twice a day if humidity still feels low.
- A mild-to-moderate feed is fine from the start — don't switch to plain water only. Homegrown Nursery clones are fed a strong nutrient regimen right up until they ship, so your clone is already accustomed to a fertilized environment. Suddenly switching to water alone can actually stress the plant more than continuing a light feeding schedule. A mild blend is the safest way to ease into your own feeding routine, though the plant can generally handle up to a full-strength blend without issue — what you want to avoid is cutting nutrients out entirely.
- Handle it as little as possible. It's tempting to check on a new clone constantly, but excess handling and repositioning adds stress on top of what it's already dealing with. A quick daily check is plenty.
2. Watering New Clones: How Much and How Often
Overwatering is one of the fastest ways to kill a clone that hasn't fully rooted yet — a small root system simply can't use up much water, and soggy soil starves roots of oxygen.
- Water moderately, and only when the top layer of soil feels dry to the touch. With the small pot size recommended in Chapter 1 (1–3 gallons), this is often every 2–4 days rather than daily, but let the soil — not the calendar — be your guide. When you do water, water thoroughly enough that it flushes fully through the container and drains out the bottom, rather than just dampening the surface.

- Water around the base, not directly on the stem. Keeping water off the stem itself reduces the risk of stem rot while the plant is still vulnerable.
- Drainage is non-negotiable. Make sure whatever container you're using has real drainage holes so water can flush all the way through and out — never let the clone sit in standing water at the bottom of a pot or a saucer underneath it. Waterlogged roots are one of the fastest ways to lose a young clone. If water pools on the surface for more than a few seconds, your soil mix may be too dense, or your container may need larger drainage holes.
3. Monitoring Root Development
Since roots are underground, you're mostly reading the plant's above-ground behavior to judge what's happening below.
Good signs your clone is rooting successfully:
- New leaf growth, even small, at the top of the plant
- Leaves that stay firm and perky rather than wilted
- Soil that dries out at a fairly consistent, predictable rate between waterings — a sign roots are actively taking up water rather than sitting idle
A simple, low-risk check: around the 14–21 day mark, you can gently lift the pot and check whether roots are visible at the drainage holes — a sign the clone is establishing well and getting closer to its first transplant.
4. Signs Your Clone Is Struggling — and What to Do
Not every clone sails through this stage without a hiccup. Here's what to watch for:
- Wilting or drooping leaves. In the first 48 hours, this is often normal transplant stress and usually resolves on its own. If it continues past day 3–4, check that you're not overwatering, and confirm the humidity dome (if using one) isn't trapping excess moisture that's suffocating the roots.
- Yellowing leaves. This early in a clone's life, yellowing is most often linked to overwatering, pH being out of range, or a mismatch between the clone's prior growing conditions and its new environment — not a nutrient deficiency yet, since it likely hasn't needed feeding. - Mold on the soil surface or stem. This usually points to poor airflow rather than humidity itself — a common cause is a dome or bag that isn't fully vented. Double-check that any dome or tenting has open vents or gaps rather than sealing the plant in, and increase airflow with your fan if mold appears. - No new growth after 2+ weeks. This doesn't necessarily mean the clone is dying, but it's worth double-checking your light schedule, watering habits, and temperature against everything in this chapter before assuming the worst.
5. The First Transplant: When and How
Once you've confirmed healthy root development — new growth up top, roots visible at the drainage holes, a plant that feels sturdy rather than fragile — it's time to move up to a larger container.
- Timing: Most clones are ready for their first transplant somewhere between 2–4 weeks after being brought home, though this varies by strain and growing conditions.
- Step up gradually. Move from your starting 1–3 gallon pot to something in the 3–5 gallon range rather than jumping straight to a large final container. As covered in Chapter 1, oversized containers hold more moisture than a still-developing root system can use, raising the risk of root rot.
- Handle the root ball gently. Try to disturb the existing roots as little as possible during the move — a rough transplant can undo weeks of careful establishment.
- Expect a short adjustment period. A day or two of mild stress after transplanting is normal. Keep an eye on watering during this window, since the plant's water needs shift slightly with the larger soil volume.
6. Keeping Up a Feeding Routine
Since your Homegrown Nursery clone was fed a strong nutrient regimen right up until it shipped, it's already used to a fertilized environment — so your job after transplanting is to keep that going, not start from scratch.
- Stick with at least a mild-to-moderate fertilizer blend — don't drop to plain water. A clone that suddenly gets nothing but water after arriving accustomed to regular feeding can actually struggle more than one kept on a light, consistent feeding schedule. A mild blend is a safe, steady choice, and the plant can generally tolerate working up to a full-strength blend without issue. With modern nutrient products, nutrient burn is genuinely hard to cause as long as you're following the manufacturer's label instructions — the bigger risk to your clone at this stage is under-feeding, not over-feeding.
