Plants must be grown in a secure, enclosed area that isn't visible from any public space — a fenced backyard, locked outbuilding, or enclosed greenhouse all qualify, but front-yard or balcony grows don't meet the requirement. If you rent, check your lease first: state law permits home cultivation, but landlords can still prohibit it through lease terms, and HOA bylaws can restrict it too, even where state law allows it.
