Is It Legal to Grow Cannabis Clones in Michigan?

Michigan voters legalized recreational cannabis in 2018 under Proposal 1 (the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marihuana Act), with legal retail sales beginning in December 2019. Michigan's home cultivation rules are among the most permissive in the nation:

• Home grow limit: Adults 21+ may grow up to 12 cannabis plants per household — this is a flat household limit, not a per-person limit, and it applies regardless of plant maturity (seedlings and flowering plants all count the same toward the 12).
• No license or registration required for recreational home cultivation within the 12-plant limit.
• Enclosed and out of public view: Plants must be grown in a secure, enclosed location equipped with functioning security devices (like a lock), and must not be visible from a public place without the aid of binoculars, aircraft, or similar equipment.
• Storage limits: You may keep up to 10 ounces of cannabis at home; anything over 2.5 ounces must be stored in a locked container or area.
• Medical patients and caregivers: Michigan's medical marijuana program (established 2008) allows registered patients and caregivers to cultivate under separate rules — caregivers can grow for up to 5 patients plus themselves, for a total of up to 72 plants, all within secure, enclosed conditions.
• Local and landlord rules: Michigan municipalities can add local restrictions around zoning or security, and landlords can prohibit cannabis cultivation in a lease regardless of your state-level right to grow.
